How to Get Started With Niche Marketing

Niche marketing is marketing that targets a specific crowd, and then produces products specifically for that crowd. It can also mean selling products that large companies don’t usually sell. This is done for a few reasons; first, the manufacturing probably won’t be as expensive, since not as many of these products have to be made. Also, the profit from sales of these products goes more to one company rather than the other ten that also make the product. Niche marketing has many perks, but one problem is not knowing where to get started on your business venture. The article below gives a few basic things to think about when first starting out. These are the usual first steps of every successful business.

Choosing A Target
The first thing to do is target a specific group that you want to gear your company toward. You want to pick a fairly broad group, but then again one small enough so that only your company (very few competitors) will manufacture products for this group. For example, maybe you want to pick out a group that wears a specific type of clothing, and you know that large companies don’t make lots of clothing for this group. Your company may want to think about making the clothing for this group. So pick your target first.

Pick A Product
After you’ve got your group picked out, you want to start thinking about the product(s) you will manufacture and sell for this group. Clothing? Accessories? Home decor? Pet supplies? This part can be tricky as well because you want a product that is rarely made, but you also want one that people are going to want to buy. You also don’t want your product to be really expensive to manufacture and sell, because this will end up costing you more money than you’re making in the end.

Pick A Price
Choosing a price to sell your product at is very important. You want profit, but you want to sell at a price low enough so that your consumers will be happy and keep coming back. If you choose a product that is fairly inexpensive to make and sell, you won’t have to jack your prices up so much. You might want to think about making your product cost as much as the manufacturing plus half. So lets say you are selling a large toy that costs one hundred dollars to make. If you sell at one hundred and fifty dollars, you will earn back your manufacturing cost plus half extra, so you profited fifty dollars in one sale.

Evaluating Your Decisions
You will now want to decide how successful your choices have been. Is the product selling? Is it popular and are people interested? Do people enjoy your prices? Are they telling their friends? Is the money you’re making worth this effort? If not, you should consider changing some things. If you’re satisfied, sit on your decisions a while more and see if they continue to work out well.

Answer: A company cannot be everything to everyone, so the successful companies use their strengths to market to their niche customers. By creating a super-niche and selling more of what is the most profitable to their company, the company can out perform their competition and keep their costs lower.

Identifying Your Niche

Long before you get busy with keyword research, competitor analysis, or link-building strategies, you need to identify the niche market within which you will be competing.

Broadly speaking, a “niche” is a sub-set of a market; for example, “1956 Chevy’s” would be a niche in the “automobile” market.

Why do we want to identify a niche? The simple and most straight-forward answer has to do with your available resources. The vast majority of Internet marketers simply won’t have the resources – financial or otherwise – to successfully compete in broad markets. So, the only viable alternative is to pick a niche within a market where you can gain a foothold, and then successfully compete (that is, make a profit).

There is much to say about identifying niches from which to start your marketing. This post, however, will focus on how to come up with some niche “ideas” from which to begin your market research.

On-line Sources

Places such as Amazon.com and Yahoo Answers are good places to go for gathering niche ideas. Google Trends is another good place to go to find out what’s hot right now.

Web 2.0 properties, such as YouTube, Squidoo, Facebook, and Twitter, all have searchable databases where you can find good ideas.

Another route would be to follow the money. For a niche to be viable there has to be enough advertisers paying for ads to be put in front of targeted readers. As such, Google AdWords, and Yahoo Marketplace are also good places to locate niches worth considering. A good place to start would be to look for keywords that show four or more paid advertisers.

While you are on-line, search through the blogs and forums for selected markets. The presence of blogs and forums is a good indication that there is a marketplace for selling products into that niche; and the blogs and forums will also help reveal needs and frustrations to be found within those niches.

Off-line Sources

Consider your local magazine rack for fresh ideas. Most every niche has magazines dedicated to interested readers, and it is a good bet that, if the magazine has been around for awhile, it has a big enough audience to support the niche.

Finally, consider your own interests and hobbies. These are rich sources of niche ideas where you can identify needs and wants in a marketplace.

So, start you research by identifying some niche ideas that you might want to pursue. Only after you have generated a number of possible niche ideas should you follow-up those ideas by conducting keyword research to estimate both the available traffic, and level of competition, within each niche.

This can be a daunting task; one that will take several hours to get through. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Health, Wealth and Love: Where Is Your Product Mix?

If I were to ask you to name the most-searched category on the Internet, what would you say? If you said “sex”, you would be right. Now, if I asked you to name the second, third, and fourth most searched categories on the Internet, what would you say? I’ll give you three hints: 1) they are “ever green”, meaning that they are searched for, year-in and year-out; 2) we are all looking for them, and; 3) they are contained in the title of this post!

The answer, of course, is: health, wealth, and love. Travis Sago, the inspired creator of “bum marketing”, has written extensively on this subject, and I would suggest you Google him to gain more insight into this subject. For the purposes of this blog, however, let me just point out that, the more you are offering products that people are actively searching for, the more sales you are likely to close; and you aren’t likely to find product categories that are more consistently searched for than the three mentioned above.

So, just what are these “health, wealth, and love” product categories?

Health-related products include those products which promote or maintain health, fitness, exercise, and proper diet and nutrition. They include exercise equipment, fitness programs, diet plans, medical treatments, sports related equipment, and much more.

Wealth-related products include those products which promise wealth accumulation, savings, protection, risk-aversion, and more. Examples include investment strategies, savings information, risk aversion advice, investment clubs, portfolio management, and more.

Love-related products include those products which show you how to attract love, rekindle love, find love, and, sometimes even how to get rid of love. Examples include such broad areas as relationships, marriage, dating, and getting your ex-partner back.

So, when you are considering your target market, take a look at your current product mix, or the products you are thinking of promoting. How many of them fall into the “health, wealth, and love” categories? How many of them cross over from one category to another?

How might you better position your current product mix to fall into these categories? Where can you go to find products that are more closely aligned with these categories?

By focusing on “health, wealth, and love” related products, you will be sure to attract more traffic and close more sales in your niche market.
