Market segments and niche markets

By Scott Spooner

Many sectors of the economy, both here in the United States and abroad, are beginning to show sings of growth. While that growth will likely remain sluggish and uneven for another year or two, the trends are definitely positive. This equals “opportunity” for the smart niche marketer who is still in the game and focused on his or her market segment.

Now is the time to reassess your niche market. Savvy business owners and managers will use this time to conduct new keyword analyses to make sure that they have their proverbial fingers on the pulse of search users. They will also be reevaluating their competitors to see who is left standing in the market, and what positions they currently occupy.

Results from market research conducted a couple of years ago may no longer be valid. Worse yet, assumptions made yesterday made lead your company down blind alleys in the changing world of today.

So, dust off your favorite keyword and competitor research tools and get busy crunching some numbers. Get reacquainted with your industry blogs and forums and keep abreast on the latest innovations, conversations, and challenges. Speak with your customers and see if their needs or wants have changed. Try and uncover new opportunities for your niche and your market.

The road ahead is bright for those who seize those opportunities. Happy hunting!

[Editor's note: As the global economy continues to remain soft, marketers and business owners alike are being forced into narrower and narrower niches in order to appeal to customer needs. Today's guest article reviews the concept niche marketing and explains how to get started as an on-line niche marketer in a short period of time. Are you finding niche marketing tougher these days? Tell me what you think by leaving a comment below. ~Scott]

If you are struggling to find a profitable niche that will generate income for you, then this article will save you lots of time to do the research and ultimately, this method will help you to find a profitable niche within 5 minutes or less from now. When selling a product, you need do the research to find a market first that spends money, then find out what they want and give it to them. After that, you will need to find main phrases for the niche and find out if your niche is making money. After finish reading this article, you will know how to find a profitable niche within 5 minutes without spending any money.

1.) Research

The Example I am about to give is the exact method I use to find hungry niches and is quite easy to do! You may not find your hobby or interest is a profitable one but at least it gives you a starting point. Just think of things that you enjoy doing like cooking, playing computer games, fishing, collecting stamps etc… The site that I use to do the research is at Google Keyword Tool. It lets you see the amount of Google results and the amount people are paying per click on Google AdWords. The next step we going to do is to find popular phrases in your niche

2.) Find main phrases in your niche market

Type in the main keyword for your niche and search for it. Bear mind though you need a good number of searches to make this a profitable income stream for you. Different marketers will tell you different numbers depending on their own point of view. I try to stick to above 2,000 a month searches for a niche term in UK or US. So you should now do the same and pick the top 5 phrases that are being most searched for in your niche. If your niche has less than 2000 searches per month then you will need to find another and try and think of another niche with more search results. So, the next thing you would need to find out is if the niche will make you any money!

3.) Find out if your niche will make you money

Bear in mind that there is no guarantees that you will make money with your product, however if you follow this step it should make 99% sure that there is a market for the taking! Go to Google and type in the top phrase. Once you have typed in your main phrase the first thing you should look at is the number of search results the query has. This is a lot of results and that normally means there is a market there. The next thing you should do is look at the number of AdWords (sponsored Links) the phrase has. These are adverts people place on Google for certain phrases. Basically the more profitable a market the more people will bid to place their ads.

Now that is the proven system to find a profitable niche market. You learned how to do the research in your niche market, you learned how to find the top 5 main phrases for your niche, and you learned how to find out if your niche will make you money. Now you have everything you need to know to find a profitable niche for free to generate income for you.

Niche Marketing Strategy – What’s the Big Deal?

Niche Marketing

Image via Wikipedia

[Editor's note: The following guest article provides a very good overview of niche marketing, and why this type of marketing strategy can produce more consistent profits for your business. Tell me what you think by leaving a comment below. ~Scott]

By

Just what the heck is a niche market strategy? As you might already know, a niche market is group of consumers that all have a similar need, desire or problem. Niche market strategy is the thought process that we use to find those hot undiscovered niches that we can develop into a profitable business model.

Now, let’s assume you are marketing designer clothes that are extravagant and expensive. You might think that your niche market would consists of people who need clothes, Right? Well, that is true but your market will be narrowed down to people who want designer clothes and can afford to buy your clothing line.

By targeting this micro niche, your targeted audience or search numbers will drop drastically and immediately, you are thinking there is no money to be made by selling to a smaller crowd. The truth of the matter is that there will be more potential to make profits by starting a new website in the designer clothes niche than in the wide open clothing niche.

Let me explain this point a little so that you don’t think that I am some sort of weirdo blowing off steam. While it is a fact that your targeted audience will be less, it is also true that you will only attract searchers that are interested in your specific product. It will be easier for you to market to this crowd because of several reasons. Below are a few of the reasons that your visitors will be more willing to buy from your site than a site that is marketing a wider variety of products.

  • You will promote your site using keyword phrases that are medium to long tail phrases that are very closely related to the contents of your website. These keywords have a fraction of the competing pages on the Internet than the shorter keyword phrases, therefore you will be able to rank higher in the search engines and be found by searchers easier.
  • People searching with longer keyword phrases are looking for a specific type of product line to buy. By providing only those associated product lines, your site will be tailored to their needs. Statistics show that visitors to a website only stay an average of seven seconds. If you only present to your visitors what they are searching for, your chances to keep them on your website improve dramatically.
  • Research has proven also that people who search using long tail keyword phrases are more apt to buy. Their search terms are more specific and they know what they want, they are just looking for a place to buy it.

A very common fatal mistake that people building websites make is trying to market their product or service to a large general market instead of focusing on a small niche market. They fail to realize that the Internet is like the LA freeway at rush hour. You have a snowballs chance of getting anywhere in that crowd.

The only way that you can compete in highly congested, overcrowded markets is to have a big advertising budget or a large existing mailing list targeted to your product line. What you will find by trying the pay-per-click PPC method is that the big dogs that have the corner on your market will have an unlimited advertising budget also. You will most likely resemble a Salmon swimming upstream.

The second huge mistake that people make when picking a niche market to build a website around is promoting a niche that they are passionate about or that they have a lot of knowledge in. It is great if you can do this, but the chances of this happening are slim.

The problem with choosing a niche that is near and dear to your heart is that there may be a limited audience looking for the information that you possess, the people may only be looking for information (their not buyers) or there are no monetization features in your field of expertise.

You must understand that without interest in your niche, a buying crowd and a way to monetize your niche, you will make no money from your online business.

Now, I know that you are interested in being successful in your online endeavors or you would not be reading this article. I am going to be straight to the point, frank and up front with you. If you really want to succeed in today’s super-competitive, dog eat dog marketplace, you have no choice but to focus your business and marketing on a specialized small niche market that has a decent amount of interest and also can be monetized with useful saleable merchandise. Unless you have a bunch of money you want to spend on an advertising campaign.

If you ignore my advice and go merrily on your way and market to a larger general market before establishing your roots successful in a couple of small niche markets, I will personally guarantee you that you will soon go broke and be out of business. That may sound cold, but those are the facts, like it or not.

The key ingredients to niche marketing strategy are:

  1. Finding a market that has a hungry crowd of people that have a problem in a low competition niche
  2. Finding saleable merchandise that will solve their problem
  3. Making sure that your hungry crowd is a buying crowd.

You need to study the keywords to determine whether or not you feel that your audience will buy or are window shoppers. When you find a niche that possesses all three of the above characteristics, you have got yourself a winner.

Niche Marketing – 4 Steps to Deciding Your Online Niche Market

Niche marketing strategy

Image via Wikipedia

[Editor's note: If you are just starting out as an on-line niche marketer then you're first step is to identify the particular niche market where you want to enter and compete. The following four steps will help you identify that niche market and start you off on the right foot. ~Scott]

By

Deciding on the right marketing niche is essential to your online success.

A marketing niche is defined as a targeted segment of a market in which your products are focused specifically to satisfy the needs of that segment. An example of an online marketing niche is a pet store selling only dog products instead of selling product for various types pets, like cats, dogs, and rabbits etc.

The four steps to finding your online niche are: choose an area you have knowledge about; have a passion for the area; discover potential customer’s unmet needs; and think of ways to meet those needs.

1. Choose an area you have knowledge about

It is best to choose an area you are familiar with. This does not mean that you cannot enter an area that you are not acquainted with; in doing so you need to take the time apply yourself to both learning and gaining experience in your chosen field. If you have knowledge, experience and expertise in your target market, potential customers will recognize those qualities – that helps to establish trust.

2. Have a passion for your area

Passion supplies energy to complete the task at hand and makes it more enjoyable. As an online marketer it is vital that your job does not wear you down and leaves you wanting to quit. Yet, passion in an area that is not bringing in revenue does not make sense. You are in this business to earn money, not to enjoy yourself and loose your hard earned money at end of the day. So choose something that is both enjoyable and gives you an income you desire.

3. Discover potential customer’s unmet needs

Fellow marketers may not satisfy all the needs of their customers. It is your duty to find out what those unmet needs are. This is done in a number of ways including, research of the target area, observation of behaviour patterns, and direct questioning of potential buyers. Through thorough research you will establish what kind of product is needed to satisfy your potential customers.

4. Think of ways to meet those needs

This process begins with the generation of an idea through imagination. This idea conceptualizes a specific product or service to solve the problem using the information gained through research. You can source the product if it already exists or you can create your own product or service. The resulting product or service is than marketed with confidence to your potential customers.

Is Google Adsense Website Monetization A Good Business Model?

Google Adsense for niche marketing

Image via CrunchBase

[Editor's note: Many niche marketers write and maintain blogs as a way to augment their income from within their niches. Today's guest article focuses on Google's AdSense program; what it is, and how to monetize your blog with it. Here's to a prosperous 2011! ~Scott]

Today I look at a number of reasons why the Google Adsense program is frowned upon by many online blog owners, and why this is a monumental mistake.

Google Adsense is the advertising program whereby Google places contextual ads on your site or blog and for which you get paid per click by each visitor to your site.

Many website owners do not exploit its potential to its fullest citing the low payout per click as a reason and the understandable lure to the fatter, juicier commissions that can be earned by affiliate marketing, either of physical products or electronic products.

Here are 3 great reasons to reconsider your approach to making money online:

  1. Whatever income you manage to generate is paid directly into your bank account by one of the most successful and largest companies in the world. No need to deal with shady affiliate vendors, some of whom get up to all sorts of practices such as siphoning off the traffic that you drive to them to their own email list.
  2. No matter what niche or market your blog caters for, there are almost certainly going to be advertisers for it. And the power of a highly targeted advertisement on your blog showing say a great price for the product or service that your reader has just read an article on is incredibly effective.
  3. Passive income-Adsense income is truly passive income. There is no list building, no preselling for affiliate products and no refunds or queries from customers. They click, you get paid.

The key to building a good Adsense income is to create multiple blogs across a wide range of niches. These blogs may only contain a few pages but the opportunity to create blogs in obscure, uncompetitive markets means that you can obtain good search engine rankings easily and visitors.

Put simply, visitors mean clicks mean income for you. There are many smart entrepreneurs who are making great income online setting up small sites or blogs which cater for the most obscure, unsexy products who derive a nice income from each site.

But the key to a great income is to build a lot of sites and let each one be a silent money maker which individually wont amount to a hill of beans..but collectively will see you making a great passive income in a matter of months.

Niche Marketing Strategy – Find a Niche Market

Hitting the bullseye with niche marketing

[Editor's note: As we near the beginning of a new year, I thought it would be good review some of the basics of niche marketing. Today's guest article takes a look at niche marketing - what niche marketing is and how you can use niche marketing to drive traffic back to your web site or blog. ~Scott]

By

In today’s internet world, the number of your competitors is increasing day by day. Especially if you are dealing with services, products or internet marketing, it is relatively simple for anyone to set up a website and the barriers to entry are very low. But in order to continue to succeed if you are an established business, or even if you are just starting out as an Internet Marketing newbie, you need to have a new way of thinking. You need to have a stealthy niche marketing strategy – a way to zoom in on untapped niches.

A niche market is one that primarily focuses on a specific product or service aimed at satisfying specific market needs. So, what niche should you look for? Unlike traditional marketing which is getting more and more obsolete by the day, a niche marketing strategy requires special tools and criteria to reveal highly-profitable undiscovered niche markets that have been overlooked by the masses. These strategies mostly boil down to using user-friendly niche market research tools, and up-to-date internet marketing techniques to help you find the most profitable niche market, improve customer loyalty with the least competition.

It is an art to capture and draw profit from a small market segment. Those who have exposure and have spent many years of their lives in mainstream marketing fields cannot really understand how to proceed in these new online niche markets. And, they will fail without the proper niche marketing strategy. Therefore, you need precision niche market research that can show you how to find a niche. Whether they realize it or not, every profit-seeking website on the internet uses this fundamental marketing strategy. The key to finding your niche is basically twofold: Divert and Convert:

Step 1 – Divert traffic from one location (Point A) to another (Point B).

Step 2 – Convert the Diverted traffic from Step 1 into profit.

There are many different ways of diverting traffic, including:

  • Pay Per Click
  • Ezine Article Marketing
  • Press Releases
  • Links From Other Websites
  • Affiliate Promotions
  • Email Lists
  • Blogging

… just to name a few.

  • Likewise, there are many ways to convert this diverted traffic into profit, including:
  • Promoting Affiliate Products
  • Hosting Content Network Ads (like Adsense)
  • Building an Email List (which you can then use to promote products)
  • Selling Your Own Product
  • Pay Per Action
  • Pay Per Lead

… plus many more.

There are almost an unlimited number of combinations of diverting and converting techniques that you can use to find a niche market that will make a profit. You just need to figure out a winning combination, and then it is guaranteed that you will make money. And, there is a powerful niche marketing strategy tool that will easily show you how to find a niche market under-the-radar, without much competition.

I am somewhat new to internet marketing. But, I have purchased many internet marketing products and services over the past few months. I have been looking for a way to start my own business from home. Like a lot of people, I have done the rounds, bought products here, e-books there, but in the long run only ended up going in circles. You see, finding “the right information”, training that you can trust can be the most challenging part of it. So many people are selling information that is worthless these days.

Now you can use powerful, top-of-the-line niche market research to create multiple streams of income online. If you want to get the jump on the competition, then watch these 5 newly filmed videos explaining 5 different niche marketing strategies at: http://website-marketing-strategy.org

Why You Should Try Micro Niche Marketing

Niche Marketing

[Editor's note: The following article illustrates a fundamental niche marketing principle: namely, the more tightly focused your niche, the more easily you will be able to rank for your keywords. Ranking equals potential traffic.]

By

It seems like no matter what your business is these days, there are about 40 bazillion other companies in exactly the same business. How do you compete with that? You can try being so much better than your competition that all of the customers naturally come to you. That is hard to do. Not only is it hard to do, but even if you are a lot better than your competitors, how do you make sure everyone knows it? You have to advertise.

Even advertising can be difficult and expensive. As it turns out, more and more companies are choosing internet marketing, because it is not only cheaper, but it can actually reach more people. By far, the cheapest and most effective means of advertising on the internet is micro niche marketing. So what is micro niche marketing?

Let’s say that you own a pet supply store that specializes in pet clothing. You decide to facilitate online orders to widen your customer base. You want to show up #1 in the search engines for search terms that your potential customers are using to find products like those that you sell. If you were to focus on the term “pet supplies”, you will have so much competition in that niche that it will take you forever (and a lot of money) to even show up on the first page of the search engines, forget about #1.

You decide to focus a little more and do some research and you find that “pet clothing” has a bit less competition. You could even go narrower and focus on “ferret sweaters” or even “purple ferret sweaters”. The process of taking a wide niche and narrowing it down to smaller, more manageable niches is micro niche marketing. While it will not give you as many visitors to your website, the visitors that you do get will be a lot more focused on your products. There is no rule that says you can’t widen your niche once you have the more focused ones dominated.

Happy advertising!
